Is There an Indicator for a Failing Alternator?

If a vehicle is not starting like it should, it may be a sign that the alternator has gone bad. There are a few different ways that you can tell if this is the case. In newer vehicles, a light may appear on the dashboard when the alternator is having trouble getting power to the battery.

In some cases, this light will be shaped like a battery. It may also simply show up as ALT or GEN on the dashboard. However, this light may only show up if the alternator is close to giving out. Therefore, drivers may need to look for signs such as dimming lights to figure out if the alternator should be looked at.
